- This
excursion is not suitable for people with
disability, as the only path to Civita di
Bagnoregio is over a long uphill foot bridge
(meteres 300 about)
-
- Introduction:
- Perched on top of a
hill among the valleys formed by Chiaro and
Torbido streams, Civita appears clinged to the
edge of a cliff where it dominates the wide
desolated valley made up of calanchi.
- This isolation is
the result of a continuous erosion that makes the
tufa rock becoming thinner and thinner on an
unstable layer of clay and sand altered by wind
and rain.
- Civita was founded
by Etruscans over 2,500 years ago and has seen
its population dwindle to just 15 residents
over the course of the 20th century, and has only
recently been experiencing a tourist revival.
- This precious chip
of Italy, a traffic-free community with a
grow-it-in-the-valley economy, has so far escaped
the ravages of modernity.
- Today Civita is an
enchanted place, where time seems to have stopped
- There are no lists
of attractions in Civita, no orientation tours or
museum hours.
- Civita is an
artist's dream, a town in the nude. It's just
Italy.
- Rome, just 90 miles
to the south, is a world away.
